Great software should, most importantly, allow you to complete your task easily and efficiently.  It should be intuitive; if you need a user manual to use the software then the designer has failed.  It should anticipate the logical flow of your task, automate where it may, and save you as much manual input as possible.  It should efficiently utilize your system resources; CPU, memory and hard-drive space -- and most importantly, your time and energy.  Great software shouldn’t monopolize your entire system or life.  Great software should assist you, not hinder you.  And great software shouldn’t cost you a small fortune.
